According to reports, around 9 PM on Monday night, the water level of the Beas River rose significantly, leading to reports of people being stranded in Ghandara and Miyan. The information reached the district control room, prompting the administration to initiate rescue operations and inform the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

The NDRF promptly launched the rescue operation around 10:30 PM, and it continued until early morning, successfully rescuing all the stranded individuals. Meanwhile, in Mandi’s Mand Bahadur, a village under the jurisdiction of Fatehpur sub-division, seven members of the Gujjar community were reported to be stuck along with their livestock.

The NDRF team, led by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Fatehpur, managed to rescue five people during the night. Additionally, two individuals were relocated to a safe place along with their animals. The rescued individuals include Raseed, Latif, Guddi, Begori, and Sushma.

The sudden release of water from the Pong Dam caught the residents off guard and caused panic among the affected communities. The administration and NDRF acted swiftly to ensure the safety of the trapped individuals, coordinating rescue efforts and utilizing all available resources.

The rescue operations were challenging due to the darkness and the rising water levels, which complicated the evacuation process. However, the relentless efforts of the rescue teams, combined with the cooperation of the stranded individuals, ensured a successful outcome.

The incident highlights the importance of maintaining constant vigilance regarding dam operations and ensuring effective communication between the dam authorities and local administrations. Timely warnings and appropriate measures can help prevent such situations and minimize the risks faced by communities residing near dams.

The rescued individuals expressed their gratitude towards the rescue teams and the administration for their swift response. They acknowledged the efforts made to ensure their safety and the rescue of their livestock, which hold great value for their livelihoods.

The administration has now shifted its focus to assessing the damage caused by the flooding and initiating relief measures for the affected individuals. Efforts are being made to provide immediate assistance, including food, shelter, and medical aid, to those affected by the unforeseen deluge.

As the region grapples with the aftermath of the incident, it serves as a reminder of the need for adequate preparedness and the development of effective disaster management strategies. Authorities must work closely with dam operators, local administrations, and communities to strengthen early warning systems and implement comprehensive plans to handle emergency situations.

The incident has also sparked discussions about the need for a proactive approach to dam management, including regular maintenance, monitoring of water levels, and coordinated communication protocols. Public awareness campaigns can play a vital role in educating communities about the risks associated with dam releases and the appropriate actions to take during such situations.

Moving forward, it is crucial to prioritize the safety of people living in dam-adjacent areas. This entails regular monitoring, timely information dissemination, and preparedness to handle emergencies effectively. Collaboration between government agencies, local communities, and experts in the field will be essential in achieving these objectives.

The authorities will continue to assess the situation and extend support to those affected by the flooding. As the affected regions begin the process of recovery and rehabilitation, it is essential for all stakeholders to learn from this incident and work towards building a safer and more resilient future.

The incident at the Pong Dam serves as a sobering reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature. It reinforces the need for collective efforts in disaster preparedness, response, and mitigation to safeguard lives and minimize the impact of such events on communities and their livelihoods.
