Beijing, China (CNN) – China’s new national map has angered its neighbors, with at least 6 countries lodging protests over the inclusion of disputed territories.
The map, released on Monday, shows China’s claims over the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, the Aksai Chin plateau, and the South China Sea. India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Japan have all objected to the map, saying that it violates their territorial sovereignty.
India was the first to complain, lodging a “strong protest” through diplomatic channels. “We reject these claims as they have no basis,” said India’s foreign secretary, Arindam Bagchi.
Malaysia also issued a statement saying that it “strongly protests” the map, which it said “seriously violates” its sovereignty over the disputed islands in the South China Sea.
The Philippines said that it “rejects” the map’s depiction of its maritime claims in the South China Sea, which it said are “illegal and invalid.”
Vietnam said that the map “seriously violates” its sovereignty over the Paracel Islands and Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
Taiwan said that the map “is a serious provocation” and that it “will not accept any attempt to change the status quo.”
Japan said that the map “ignores Japan’s territorial rights” over the Senkaku Islands.
China has defended the map, saying that it is a “correct reflection” of its territorial claims. “We have never wavered in our commitment to resolving territorial disputes through peaceful means,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian.
However, the map has raised tensions in the region and could complicate efforts to resolve the long-standing territorial disputes.
The new map is the latest in a series of moves by China to assert its claims in the South China Sea and other disputed territories. In recent years, China has built artificial islands in the South China Sea and deployed military forces to the area. It has also been accused of harassing fishing boats and other vessels from other countries.
The United States has been critical of China’s actions in the South China Sea, and has said that it will not allow Beijing to dominate the region. The US has also been conducting freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea, which China has condemned.
The tensions in the South China Sea are a major source of instability in the region. The dispute could escalate into conflict if the countries involved are unable to reach a resolution.
